When Science Meets Cypriot Tradition

“The World Shrinks” is a unique cinematic experience that brings to light the fascinating yet largely unknown story of an animal closely connected with the rural population of Cyprus.

Produced by Juno12 and directed by Markos Kassinos, the documentary is based on the scientific findings of the ARETI research project, carried out by the Cyprus Institute in collaboration with the Agricultural Research Institute and the Institute of Population Genetics in Dublin. Drawing on material from archaeology, genetics, history, and oral tradition, the film illuminates both well-known and hidden aspects of the journey of an animal that for centuries served as the most loyal companion of the Cypriot farmer.

“The World Shrinks” is not merely a nostalgic journey through time. It is a short film which, through the power of image and sound, highlights the ecological and cultural consequences of the loss of agrobiodiversity and celebrates the timeless bond between humans and working animals.
